Open in App
Solution

Instructions: Use the concept that it takes sun 4 mins to cover 1 degree. Then use the given time to calculate the standard longitude.

Solution:

Standard time of Newfoundland : GMT - 3.5 hours

3.5 hours = 3*60+30=210 minutes (1M)

Time taken by sun to cover 1 degree=4mins (1M)

Distance covered in 210 minutes = 210/4=52.5 degrees (1M)

Now as there is minus (-) sign in the standard time we can infer the time of Newfoundland is BEHIND the GMT.Thus it must be in the West. (1M)

Standard meridian of Newfoundland: 52.5 degrees West (1M)
