Question

State a condition under which a bimolecular reaction is kinetically first order reaction.

Open in App
Solution

Presence of one of the reactants in excess, as in such a condition, its concentration remains constant and rate of such reaction depends upon the concentration of one reactant only and the reaction is known as pseudo-first order reaction e.g.. acid catalysed the hydrolysis of ethyl acetate.

CH3COOC2H5Ethyl acetate+H2OH+CH3COOHAcetic acid+CH2H5OHEthyl alcohol

This reaction is bimolecular but is found to be of the first order as experimentally it is observed that the rate of reaction depends upon the concentration of ethyl acetate not on water as it is present in excess, it means, When the concentration of H2O is taken in large excess, rate law will become,

Rate = k [CH3COOC2H5 ] Where, the k=k[ H2O ].

The order of reaction will be equal to one.
