Question

State and explain Kirchhoff's Law.

Open in App
Solution

Step 1. Statement of Kirchhoff's Law

  1. The principle of this law is to conserve the electric charge.
  2. There are two laws related to Kirchoff's Law.

Step 2. Kirchhoff law of Current

  1. The principle of this law is to conserve the electric charge.
  2. The law states that the amount of current flowing into a node is equal to the sum of currents flowing out of it.
  3. In other words, the algebraic sum of all the currents in any given circuit will be equal to zero

In general n=1kIn=0 when In is the current

Step 3. Kirchhoff law of voltage

  1. The principle of this law is to conserve energy.
  2. The law states that the sum of voltages in a closed loop is zero.
  3. The total amount of energy gained is equal to the energy lost per unit charge.

VAB+VBC+VCD+VDA=0

Note: When you start at any point in the loop and keep going in the same direction, you’ll notice that the voltage drops in all directions, whether negative or positive, and you’ll come back to the same point. It is important to maintain either a counterclockwise or a clockwise rotation; otherwise, the final voltage value will not be zero.
