Question

State and explain the large scale use of the process of sedimentation and decantation.

Open in App
Solution

Sedimentation and decantation processes can be used to separate grains from dirt and dust.

  • Mix the mixture of grains and dirt into water.
  • Now let the mixture stand for some time.
  • Since, grain particles are heavy, they settle down by the process of sedimentation at the bottom while dirt will remain suspended in water.
  • Now this water mixed with dirt is poured into a separate beaker by the process of decantation.
  • And the grain particles are sun-dried.
  • This is how grains are separated from dirt particles using the process of sedimentation followed by decantation.
