Question

State and explain the transformation of energy. What sorts of energy transformations are taking place in a hydroelectric power plant.

Solution

  1. Energy transformation or energy conservation is the process of converting one form of energy into another form of energy since energy can neither be created nor be destroyed.
  2. A hydroelectric power plant uses a dam to store a large quantity of water.
  3. Water stored in a dam has gravitational potential energy since the water level is raised above the ground.
  4. The gravitational potential energy of water gets converted into kinetic energy of water which turns the propeller of the turbine.
  5. The turbine propeller is connected to a generator unit which produces electricity.
  6. Hence in a hydroelectric power plant gravitational potential energy is converted into electrical energy.
