Solution

Fractional distillation is the process of separating two or more miscible liquids having close boiling points into distinct components.

In this process, the mixture is heated in a distillation column. The liquid having lower boiling point, vapourizes first followed by the order of increasing boiling points of the remaining components.

Two applications of Fractional distillation are:

  1. It is used to separate a mixture of water and alcohol.
  2. It can also be used to isolate gases from air.
  3. It is also used in petroleum industry.
