Question

State Archimedes' principle. How is Archimedes' principle used to design ships and submarines?

Open in App
Solution

Archimedes' Principle:- Whenever an object is immersed wholly or partially in a fluid, it experiences an upward force of buoyancy due to that fluid, and the magnitude of this force is equal to the weight of the fluid displaced by it.

Explanation:-

  1. As we know the density of the saltish water is more than that of freshwater, hence to balance the heavyweight of ships and submarines water gets displaced by the lesser volume of the ship and submarine.
  2. As a result, the ship and submarine rise slightly on entering the seawater.
