Question

State Boyle's Law Equation.

Open in App
Solution

Boyle's Law:

According to Boyles’s law, at constant temperature, volume of a given mass of gas is directly proportional to the pressure of the gas.

Boyle's law equation can be written mathematically as P1V

  • P=k1V
  • where P= pressure of the gas and V= Volume of the gas at constant temperature.
  • Also, on removing the sign of proportionality, a constant of proportionality is introduced
  • where k= constant of proportionality
  • Therefore, PV=k
  • i.e.; for a given mass of a gas, the product of pressure and volume of the gas is constant at a given temperature.

For a gas at constant temperature and two different conditions, Boyle's law can be written as

  • P1V1=P2V2

Where P1andV1 is the pressure and volume of the gas at initial conditions

P2andV2 is the pressure and volume of the gas at final conditions
