Question

State drawbacks of Rutherford's atomic model.

Open in App
Solution

Drawbacks of Rutherford's atomic model:

  • According to Rutherford’s model, electrons revolve around the nucleus in a circular path. But failed to explain the stability of electrons in a circular path.
  • Particles in motion in circular paths would undergo acceleration and this causes radiation of energy by the charged particles.
  • Eventually, the electrons will lose their energy and fall into the nucleus. But it never happens and the existence of the atom will be questioned here.

Hence, the major drawback is the stability of the electrons in a circular path was not explained well by Rutherford's atomic model.
