Conversion of Ethyl alcohol to Ethene

  • Ethyl alcohol is converted into ethene by heating Ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) in the presence of concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4).
  • The chemical reaction is as follows.

C2H5OHl(Ethylalcohol)heatH2SO4C2H4g(Ethene)+H2Ol(Water)

  • This reaction is an example of dehydration reaction.
  • Ethene is used to manufacture polyethene.
  • It also works well as fuel.
