State in brief the function of digestive enzymes.

Digestion is the process of breakdown of large macromolecules into smaller molecules by the action of enzymes. Digestive enzymes are present in digestive juices which are secreted by various glands and components in the digestive system. There are four categories of digestive enzymes:
  • Carbohydrases: These enzymes digest carbohydrates. For example, Amylase.
  • Proteinases: These enzymes digest proteins. For example, Pepsin.
  • Lipases: These enzymes digest lipids. For example, Gastric lipase
  • Nucleases: These enzymes digests nucleic acids.
