Question

State Newton's law of gravitation. What do you mean by the universal constant of gravitation G? What is the SI unit of G?

Solution

  1. The universal law of gravitation states that every object in the universe attracts the other objects with a force whose magnitude is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them.
  2. This law is also known as Newton's law of gravitation.
  3. This law can be expressed mathematically as F=Gm1m2R2, where G is the gravitational constant, m1 and m2 are the masses of the objects and R is the distance between them.
  4. The value of the universal gravitational constant G is 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2 kg-2.
  5. Hence, the SI unit of the gravitational constant G is Nm2 kg-2.
