Question

State one chemical test between the following pair:

Sodium carbonate and Sodium sulphite.

Open in App
Solution

Dilute Hydrochloric acid test (HCl):

  • Add dilute Hydrochloric acid (HCl) to both the compounds i.e., Sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) and Sodium sulphite (Na2SO3) and pass the liberated gas through acidified Potassium dichromate solution (K2Cr2O7).
  • When dilute HCl is added to the Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3), it will liberate CO2 gas.
  • When CO2 gas passed through the acidified Potassium dichromate solution (K2Cr2O7), it does not show any change in the color of the solution.

Balanced chemical equation:

Na2CO3aqāŸSodiumcarbonate+2HClaqāŸHydrochloricacidā†’2NaClaqāŸSodiumchloride+H2OlāŸwater+CO2gāŸcarbondioxidegas

  • While when dilute HCl is added to the Sodium Sulphite (Na2SO3), it will liberate SO2 gas.
  • When SO2 gas passed through the acidified Potassium dichromate solution (K2Cr2O7), it will turn the potassium dichromate solution green.

Balanced chemical equation:

Na2SO3sāŸSodiumsulphite+2HClaqāŸHydrochloricacidā†’2NaClaqāŸSodiumchloride+H2OlāŸwater+SO2gāŸSulphurdioxidegas
