State one observation which shows that atom is not indivisible.
The two observations which show that atoms are not indivisible are:
1. In 1897, JJ Thomson showed that when gas is passed in the tube with two charged plates at two ends, there was an electric charge observed. Thus, the gas atoms had broken down.
2. In 1911, Rutherford aimed a stream of alpha rays on a thin sheet of gold. It was observed that some rays deflected by some angle while there were few which deflected by more than 90 degrees. There were some rays which passed undeflected. This proved that the atom constituted of a core which was positively charged. Also, an atom had a large space around the nucleus which was sparsely occupied. thus, it was shown that an atom was divisible.
