Question

State Rutherford's structure of atom.

Open in App
Solution

Rutherford's structure of an atom:

  1. Positive charge is concentrated in the center of an atom which carries almost entire mass of an atom. This was named as the nucleus.
  2. Size of the nucleus is negligible as compared to the size of an atom as a whole.
  3. Electrons are present in the circular paths called orbits around the nucleus in which they revolve.
  • Rutherford's atomic model was analogous to the motion of the planets around the sun in the solar system.
  • He proposed that the electrons revolve in the circular paths around the nucleus just as the planets revolve in the orbits around the sun.
