The matter that is made from only one kind of particle is called a pure substance. An element is made of only one type of atom. For example, the element silver is formed when many silver atoms come together.

Similarly, compounds are made up of only one kind of molecule. For example. sodium chloride is formed when many molecules of only sodium chloride come together. So atoms and molecules are pure substances.
