Solution

Part : I
On the basis of classification of electronic configuration element in the modern periodic table are classified into
1. Metal ( s-block )
2. Non-Metals (p-block )
3. Transition elments (d-block )
4. Lanthanoids and actinoids (f-block elements)

Part : II
Metallic character is defined as the tendency of an element to lose its outer electron.
Along the groups :
As we move down the group the electrostatic attraction between the nucleus and outer-electron decreases due to increase in the distance from nucleus of outer electron with increase in size of sub-shell orbital. The element will lose electron more easily. So, finally down the group metallic character increases.
Secondly along the period metallic character decreases due to decrease in size of atom and increase in electronegativity.
