Pollination:

  1. Pollination is the mechanism of transferring of pollen grains which are shed from anther to the stigma of a pistil.
  2. It brings the male and female gamete of flowering plants together.

Self pollination:

  1. When pollen grains of a flower transfer to the stigma of the same flower, it is called self pollination.
  2. Another name of self pollination is autogamy.
  3. In this type of pollination the flower doesn’t open or stigma and anthers lie close to one another.
  4. Examples: Viola, oxalis.

Three disadvantages of self pollination:

  1. This doesn’t allow any variation so the next generations are not genetically modified.
  2. The characters which are defective cannot be eliminated through this process
  3. Self pollination for many generations cause down quality of the species or breed.
