(i) It is weakly alkaline in nature and neutralizes the acid (HCl) formed in stomach.

${N a H C O}_{3} + H C l \to N a C l$ + $H_{2} O$ + ${C O}_{2}$

(ii) It evolves ${C O}_{2}$ in the form of bubbles when a cake is baked. As a result, the cake becomes porous and fluffy.

${N a H C O}_{3}$ $\to$ ${N a}_{2} {C O}_{3}$ + $H_{2} O$ + ${C O}_{2}$
