Question

State the condition when a body is in static equilibrium. Give one example of static equilibrium.

Open in App
Solution

To define static equilibrium:

When a body remains at rest under the influence of the applied forces, then the body is said to be in static equilibrium.

For example:

A cup lying on a dining table is in static equilibrium.

Conditions for static equilibrium:

  • The resultant of all forces that are acting on the body should be zero.
  • The resultant of the moment of force of the rotational force acting on the rigid body around the turning point on the axis of rotation should be zero.
