State the conditions required for the following reaction to take place, Catalytic oxidation of Ammonia to Nitric oxide .

Catalytic oxidation of ammonia:

  • Ammonia when heated at temperature 800°C, in the presence of platinum (Pt) catalyst, leads to the formations of Nitric oxide (NO), and water.
  • A large amount of heat is liberated during the reaction.
  • The balanced chemical reaction can be represented as:

4NH3(g)Ammoniagas+5O2(g)OxygengasPt,800°C6H2O(g)Water+4NO(g)Nitricoxide+Heat

  • Nitric oxide is further oxidized to give brown fumes of Nitrogen dioxide gas.
  • The balanced chemical reaction can be represented as:

2NO(g)Nitricoxide+O2(g)Oxygen2NO2(g)Nitrogendioxide

Hence, the conditions required are :

  1. Temperature - 800°C
  2. Catalyst Platinum- (Pt)
