The Andaman and Nicobar islands are a group of islands and one of the seven union territories of India . They are situated at the juncture of Bay of Bengal and Andaman sea .
This group of islands is the homeland of a wide variety of flora and fauna . As per economy is concerned these island are developed in the field of agriculture , industries , tourism etc . Cash crops , food crops , pulses , oilseeds , spices , fruits , vegetables etc are grown there . Fishery and other small scale and handicraft industry is very important in these islands . Maximum revenue is generated from fishery and tourism . Andaman and Nicobar islands with its exotic beaches , beautiful locations and unmatched scenic beauty is a tourist hot spot . Even power plants have developed on these islands .
Now if we talk about the history of these islands we discover many intriguing facts . The island was inhabited by tribal population until 1789 . The East India Company came here in 1789 but left soon in 1796 . It was in 1857 , during the First War of India Independence that the island was used as a penal colony , called " kalapani " . The convicts were sent to these islands by the British . During World War II it practically came under the Japanese . This group of islands has a rich history and topography .
