  1. The frictional force opposes the application of force to an item in static friction, and the object stays at rest until the force of static friction is overcome.
  2. The frictional force resists an object's motion in kinetic friction.

Empirical Laws of Friction:

  1. Friction is unaffected by the surface of contact.
  2. The kinetic friction coefficient is smaller than the static friction coefficient.
  3. Frictional force always acts in the opposite direction to the motion of one body over the other.
  4. The degree of frictional force between any two bodies in contact is directly proportional to their normal force.
