Solution

Adrenal gland:

  1. Adrenal glands or suprarenal glands are small triangular-shaped structures located at the anterior part of both kidneys.
  2. They produce hormones that help in modulating the metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, stress response, and other essential functions.
  3. They are made up of two portions: the adrenal cortex and the adrenal medulla, each accountable for the production of different hormones.
  4. The outer portion of the gland is called the adrenal cortex which makes three different hormones: mineralocorticoids (help conserve sodium in the body), glucocorticoids (raise blood sugar), and gonadocorticoids (modulate sex hormones like estrogen).
  5. The adrenal medulla is the inner portion of the adrenal gland which produces epinephrine and norepinephrine during times of stress and danger.
  6. The diseases which can be caused by defective adrenal glands are adrenal gland tumors, adrenocortical carcinoma, Cushing syndrome, pituitary tumors, adrenal gland suppression, and Addison's disease.
