Question

State the factor on which the position of center of gravity of a body depends on. Explain using an example

Open in App
Solution

Mass distribution is what it depends on.

If you take a body which is symmetrical, the CG will lie on the axis about which it is symmetrical.

Every part of mass will exert a downward moment on the body on its side.

At CG the body experiences equal moment from all sides so it will be stable.

Also note that if the body is so long or big such that the acceleration due to gravity varies from one portion of the body to another, the mass distribution alone is not considered. Then the CG is determined by appropriate geometrical equations.

For a body CM (centre of mass) is constant but CG (centre of gravity) varies according to the acceleration variability in the body.

Hope this helps :)
