  • An acid is any Hydrogen- containing substance that is capable of donating a proton to another substance.
  • According to Arrhenius's concept of acids, acid generates H+ ions in a solution.
  • HCl(aq)H+(aq)+Cl-(aq)
  • Example - Hydrochloric acid (HCl)

The physical properties of acids are as follows:

  • Acids have a sour taste.
  • They turn blue litmus red.
  • They have a pH of less than 7.
  • The mineral acids are colorless liquids, but sometimes sulphuric acid becomes yellow due to impurities.
  • They are soluble in water.
  • Strong acid causes burn on the skin.
  • Strong acids also destroy the fabric.
  • Acids are electrolytes.
