Solution

Sublimation is the process of state change of substance directly from solid-state to gaseous state.

  • Mixture of sublimable and non-sublimable substances can be separated using the technique called sublimation.
  • The mixture of sublimable and non-sublimable substance is heated in a china dish by covering with an inverted funnel (the stem of the funnel is closed with cotton to prevent the escape of vapours)
  • Then the sublimable substance turned into vapours, on the cooler sides of the funnel it gets solidified and separated.
  • The non-sublimable substance remains within the china dish.
  • Mixture of iodine and sand can be separated using this method where iodine is a sublimable substance.
  • Examples of sublimable substances: ammonium chloride (NH4Cl), camphor, iodine.
