Question

State the law of conservation of mass. Who gave this law?

Open in App
Solution

Law Of Conservation Of Mass.

The law of conservation of mass states that the mass in an isolated system can neither be created nor be destroyed but can be transformed from one form to another. Antoine Lavoisier gave the law of conservation of mass.

There is no gain or loss in mass in a chemical reaction, the mass remains conserved. It should be made clear that the total mass of reactants or products remains before and after the reaction.

  1. The burning of wood is a conservation of mass as the burning of wood involves Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, water vapour, and ashes.
  2. On heating the calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, and carbon oxide are formed.100g of calcium carbonate, is completely decomposed to give 56 g of calcium oxide and 44 g of carbon dioxide.

CaCO3 CaO + CO2

Calcium carbonate (100g) Calcium oxide (56g) Carbon dioxide (44g) Total 56 + 44 = 100 g

Hence the mass of calcium carbonate (Reactant) and mass of calcium oxide and carbon dioxide (Products) is the same.
