Law of constant proportions: The law of constant proportions states that in a chemical substance the elements are always present in a fixed ratio by mass whatever its methods of preparation may be.

Example: The production of water.

  • There are many different methods that can be used for producing water.
  • However, all these methods result in the mass proportion by mass of 1:8 which is Hydrogen and Oxygen respectively.
