Law of reciprocal proportion

• The law state that when two elements combine separately with a definite mass of another element, the ratio of the mass of two combining elements is an integral multiple of the ratio in which they combine with each other.
• Example - In ${\mathrm{CH}}_4$12 g of carbon combines with 4 g of hydrogen.

Therefore the ratio by mass of carbon to hydrogen is =$12:4$ = $3:1$
