Medulla oblongata

  1. The medulla oblongata which is also known as the brain stem forms the lowest portion of the brain.
  2. It is a triangular structure and continues down posteriorly as the spinal cord. It is located below the cerebellum.

Functions:

  1. The medulla oblongata contains cardiac, respiratory, vomiting, and vasomotor centers.
  2. It deals with the autonomic functions of breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and sleep-wake cycle.
  3. Respiration is regulated by chemoreceptors.
  4. Cardiovascular activity is controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
  5. Vasomotor activity is regulated by baroreceptors.
