State the major difference between an AC and a DC generator.

Open in App
Solution

AC and DC generator:

An AC generator is a kind of electrical device that transforms the mechanical energy form into an AC electrical form of energy. While DC generator also converts the mechanical input energy into DC electrical energy.

The major difference between an AC and a DC generator:

AC generatorDC generator
1.It is also known as an alternator. It is also termed as Dynamo.
2.The alternating current can be induced in the rotor or stator.Direct current can be produced in the rotor only.
3.It produces an alternating current. It produces direct current.
4.It used slip rings for the induced current transmission. It uses split rings for the transfer of induced current.
5.Output voltage amplitude is higher as compared to DC generator. Its output voltage amplitude is comparatively lower.
6.AC output is suitable for long distances transmission.DC output is not suitable for long distances.
7.It has a simple design. It is complex in design.
8.No occurrence of short circuit. The short circuit may arise here.

Thus, the major difference between an AC and a DC generator is shown in the above table.
