Question

State the name of the acid and the base from which the following salts have been formed. Also state whether the salt is acidic or basic in nature:-
1. Potassium acetate
2. Ammonium sulphate

Open in App
Solution

1. Salt : Potassium Acetate (CH3COOK)
Base : Potassium Hydroxide (KOH)
Acid : Acetic Acid (CH3COOH)

The reaction is :
CH3COOH +KOH CH3COOK + H2O

As the salt is formed by weak acid and strong base,so the salt is basic in nature.

2. Salt : Ammoinium sulphate ((NH4)2SO4)
Basic : Ammonium Hydroxide (NH4 OH)
Acid : Sulphuric Acid (H2SO4)

The reaction is :

2NH4OH + H2SO4 (NH4)2SO4 + 2H2O

The salt is formed by weak base and strong acid so the salt is acidic in nature.
