Solution

Double displacement reaction:

  • Those reactions in which two compounds react by an exchange of ions to form two new compounds are called double displacement reactions.
  • Example: Fe2O3(s)+6HCl(aq)2FeCl3(aq)+3H2O(l)

On adding Ammonium hydroxide to the aqueous solution of Aluminum chloride, the following observation is obtained :

  • A white precipitate of Aluminum hydroxide(Al(OH)3) will be observed on adding Ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) to Aluminum chloride (AlCl3) under the double displacement reaction.

Reaction involved:

  • AlCl3(aq)+3NH4OH(aq)Al(OH)3(s)(whiteppt)+3NH4Cl(aq)
  • Hence, a white precipitate of Aluminum hydroxide will be observed.
