State the principle involved in separation of solid-liquid mixtures by - sedimentation and decantation

Open in App
Solution

The principle involved in the separation of solid-liquid mixtures by - sedimentation and decantation:

  1. The solid component is heavier than the liquid and insoluble in the liquid.
  2. The process in which heavier particles get settled at the bottom is called sedimentation and the solid left at the bottom is called sediment.
  3. Pouring clear water into another beaker without disturbing the sediment is called decantation.
  4. Example: Purification of a mixture of sand and water.
