State the rules that are followed while deriving the chemical symbols of various elements.

  • For many elements, the symbol seems to have been derived from the English name.

Example: Oxygen is "O"


  • Other symbols are derived from the Latin name of the element.

Example: “Ferrum” is Latin for iron, the symbol is "Fe"


1. The first letter should be in upper case.

Example:

N - Nitrogen

C - Carbon

2. If an element has a two-letter symbol, the first letter should be written in the upper case and the second letter in the lower case.

Example:

Mg - Magnesium

Cu - copper
