State the type of bonding in the following molecule:

  1. Water
  2. Calcium oxide.

Solution

Type of bonding:

  1. A covalent bond is formed between the atoms of the non-metal element. The atoms can be of the same element or different elements. e.g. H2O
  2. An ionic bond is formed between the metal ion and non-metal. e.g. NaCl
  3. A coordinate bond is formed between the molecule containing lone pair and a positively charged ion( generally H+ion). e.g. NH4+

Hence,

  1. Water (H2O): The constituent atom is H and C both are non-metal so the bond between them will be a covalent bond
  2. Calcium Oxide (CaO): The constituent atom is Ca and O, in which Ca is metal and O is non-metal. so the type of bond will be an ionic bond.
