Question

State the type of bonding in the following molecules.

(a) water, (b) calcium oxide, (c) hydrogen chloride

Open in App
Solution

a. Water -Polar covalent bond
H2O is a covalent bond as one oxygen is bonded to two hydrogen atoms and sharing of electrons takes place. They are polar because oxygen and hydrogen attract the shared electrons unequally
b. Calcium oxide - Ionic bond
Oxygen(2,6) has six valence electrons and is looking to gain two electrons to complete its octet. It will gain its two electrons from the calcium atom(2,8,8,2). As Ca will lose two electrons to become stable. Hence an ionic bond is formed in which valence electrons are lost from one atom and gained by another.
c. Hydrogen chloride -Polar covalent compound.
HCl is a covalent bond as Chlorine is bonded to hydrogen atoms and sharing of electrons takes place. They are polar because chlorine and hydrogen attract the shared electrons unequally.
