Question

State the universal law of gravitation?

Open in App
Solution

According to the universal law of gravitation:

  1. Every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force known as the gravitational force of attraction.
  2. The magnitude of the force is directly proportional to the product of their masses (m). i.e.,Fαm1m2..............(a)
  3. The magnitude of the force is inversely proportional to the square of the distance (r) between them. i.e., Fα1r2..............(b)
  4. From equations (a) and (b) we get, F=Gm1m2r2., where G= Universal gravitational constant.
  5. The value of G=6.67×10-11Nm2/kg2.

Hence, every object in the universe attracts every other object with a force known as the gravitational force of attraction, whose magnitude is F=Gm1m2r2. This is a universal law of gravitation.
