One nitrogen and three oxygen atoms make up the nitrate ion (NO₃).
The valency of oxygen is -2 since it belongs to group 16.
Nitrogen belongs to group 15, has a charge of +5, and forms a connection with three oxygen atoms.
N= 5, O= -2
NO₃= 5 + 3 (-2)
5-6 = -1
Nitrate has a valency of -1.
