State the visible change and give equations for the action when a piece of Ca is added to cold water.

Solution

Calcium reacts fairly vigorously with cold water in an exothermic reaction. Bubbles of hydrogen gas are given off and white precipitate of calcium hydroxide is formed together with an alkaline solution. Calcium hydroxide is slightly soluble.
