Solution

An alloy is a mixture of a metal with another metal or a metal and a non-metal. Examples of some alloys are Brass, Bronze, Stainless steel, etc.

Alloying is done for many reasons

  1. To give attractive look: For example : german silver[Cu + Zn + Ni] has attractive silvery appearance.

  2. Increase hardness: Brass [Cu + Zn] is harder than copper.
  3. Lower melting point: SOLDER [Pb + Sn] has low melting point.
