Solution

Addition of NH4Cl to a solution containing ferric and magnesium ions is essential for selective precipitation or ferric hydroxide by aqueous ammonia. Ammonium chloride suppress the ionisation of ammonium hydroxide so that only the group III radicals are precipitated because the solubility produict of group III hydroxides is less than that of group IV and group VI hydroxides.
