State true or false. In the formation of ionic bonds, the metals and non-metals exchange their valence electrons only.
True
In the ionic bond, two oppositely charged ions are held together by electrostatic forces. The metal atom looses the valence electrons while the non-metal atom accepts these electrons. By losing electrons, metal atoms changes to cations and by accepting electrons, non-metal atoms changes to anions. These oppositely charged ions come closer to form ionic bonds.
