Limiting reagent is the reagent taken in inadequate quantity. It reacts completely but limits further progress of the reaction.
For example, consider following neutralisation reaction.
HCl+NaOHNaCl+H2O.
1 mole of HCl will completely neutralise 1 mole of NaOH. If the reaction mixture contains 1 mole of HCl and 2 moles of NaOH, then HCl is the limiting reagent and NaOH is excess reagent. 1 mole of HCl will react with 1 mole of NaOH and 1 mole of NaOH will remain unneutralised.
