The continuous movement of water in which water evaporates, falls on the land as rain and later flows back into the sea via rivers is known as the water cycle.
Water from all the reservoirs present on land evaporates due to heat. Even plants contribute to evaporation by the process of transpiration. It then exists in the form of water vapour in the atmosphere. The water vapours expand and cool as they go up. Due to cooling, they form water droplets around a 'nucleus'. Here any dust particle or particulate matter acts a nucleus around which water molecules gather and condense to form water droplet. These water droplets further condense and form clouds. When the clouds become large and heavy, the water droplets fall down as rain. All of the water that falls on the land does not immediately flow back into the sea. Some of it seeps into the soil and becomes part of the underground reservoir of fresh water.
