(a) Characteristics of a solid:

(i) Solids have a fixed shape and fixed volume.
(ii) Particles are tightly packed, usually in a regular pattern.


(b) Characteristics of a liquid:

(i) Liquids have a fixed volume but no fixed shape, they take the shape of the vessel in which they are placed.
(ii) These particles are close together with no regular arrangement.


(c) Characteristics of a gas:

(i) Gases particles gas vibrate and move freely at high speeds.

(ii) These are no fixed volume and no fixed shape, they take the shape of the container in which they are placed.
(iii) These particles are well separated with no regular arrangement.
