Question

State two conditions necessary to liquefy a gas.

Open in App
Solution

Liquefaction of gases:

  • Liquefaction of gases is the process in which a gas is liquified to change its state from gas to liquid.
  • A gases can be liquified by increasing pressure and reducing the temperature.

Effect of pressure: When we increase the pressure, the gaseous molecule come close together.

Effect of Temperature: When we decrease the temperature, the kinetic energy of gaseous particles decreases and they become slower.

The pressure that has to be applied as well as the temperature depends on the molecular forces of the gas molecules. Hence, a gas can be liquified by cooling or by application of pressure, or by the combining effect of both.

Example: Ammonia gas can be liquefied by applying high pressure and lowering the temperature.
