Question

State two conditions for sustained interference of light. Also write the expression for the fringe width

Open in App
Solution

Conditions for sustained interference pattern:

1. The two sources of light must be coherent with same frequency or wavelength and with same phase or constant phase difference.

2. The two sources should preferably have the same amplitude.

3. The two sources must be very close to each other.

4. The sources should emit light waves continuously.

From YDSE,

Δx=ydD

λ(n14)=ydD

n=1,λ(114)=y1dD

3λ4=y1dD

y1=3λD4d

n=2,λ(214)=y2dD

7λ4=y2dD

y2=7λD4d

Fringe width, β=y2y1

β=7λD4d3λD4d

β=λDd
