Iodine is a brownish grey solid which is crystalline and has a metallic luster. It is soluble in organic solvents but insoluble in water.

Uses if Iodine

  • Tincture of iodine (iodine + alcohol+ water) is used in the healing of wounds as iodine has antiseptic properties which help in killing different microorganisms and thus increasing the rate of the wound healing process.
  • Iodine is used in common salt as it helps in eradicating the deficiency of iodine which leads to the formation of goiter (abnormal swelling of neck).
